Foods High in Cholesterol

Most people think that eating foods that have high cholesterol content means that their cholesterol levels would immediately shoot up. However, recent studies have shown that majority of us don't need to be worried about how much cholesterol we consume but need to be vigilant about certain fats that we ingest. Those with diabetes or heart ailments are not only advised to avoid foods with high cholesterol content but are also cautioned to be careful with the amount of trans fat and saturated fats they intake.

Saturated fats are the ones that are usually responsible for raising your LDL cholesterol or "bad" cholesterol. A healthy diet usually contains about 7 to 10 percent of saturated fat intake. For those who have high levels of cholesterol, an intake of less than 7 percent is advised. These types of fats are usually found in veal, beef, egg yolks, processed meat, butter, whole milk dairy products, poultry, baked goods, palm oil, coconut and coconut oil, and palm kernel oil.

Trans fats are made when vegetable oil in liquid form is heated while hydrogen is present. This process is called hydrogenation. When the oil becomes hard at room temperature, it would contain a large quantity of trans fat. This type of fats has the worst effect on our cholesterol levels. They elevate our low-density lipoprotein or LDL ("bad cholesterol") levels while reducing our HDL or high- density lipoprotein ("good" cholesterol) levels. Trans fats are found in margarines, processed foods, commercially baked foods, snack foods, and fried foods. These fats should be reduced in our diet or better yet, completely removed.

Cholesterol usually comes from animals. Foods such as beef liver, sponge cake made of egg yolks, beef kidney, eggs, butter, hard and soft cheese, veal, chicken, lamb, duck, caviar, goose, crab, pork, prawn, lobster, scallops, margarine, and oysters contain large amounts of cholesterol. Eggs and liver have the highest cholesterol content among the group. Dietitians advise that your intake of these foods be lessened as much as possible to avoid elevating your cholesterol level.

People are advised that cholesterol intake should be only around 300 mg daily. Some people skip eating foods rich in cholesterol for two days straight so that they'd be able to eat an egg, for example, on the third day but still stay within their cholesterol limit. It depends on how you plan your diet and with your nutritionist's guidance your cholesterol would surely be controlled.

Knowledge is indeed power and having enough information about where foods with high cholesterol content are from could be beneficial in controlling your cholesterol.

If you take a look at the magazine racks at the grocery store, you will notice that many of them have to do with bodybuilding or muscle building. Whether or not you have an interest in bodybuilding--the sport of physique competition--chances are that you would like to be more muscular than you are. It has been my experience that a happy person wants to be happier, and a muscular person wouldn't turn down the chance to have bigger muscles.

But how do you do it? Each magazine promises that it has the secret, or the magic formula to lean mass that you simply must know. Meaning: you must buy the magazine to find out. And then, once you are reading the magazine, you will realize that they all say basically the same thing. You need to lift heavy weights and eat enough food to help the muscles grow.

The fitness industry makes its money by manufacturing an information gap between the "experts" and the novice weight trainer. They want you to believe that you cannot possibly reach your fitness goals without their advice, product, equipment, or supplements.

I have some news: there is a magic formula, it just isn't very sexy and it will not result in immediate gratification. The easiest way to build muscle is to get stronger. If you are lifting heavier weights each time you go into the gym--or if you are lifting more total weight during a workout than in previous sessions--you will be building muscle. The body reacts to the stresses we impose upon it. Lifting weight in a given pattern like a bicep curl or a bunch press creates tissue along those lines of stress.

If you are always striving to lift more, you will always be building bigger muscles. Enjoy strength training, not size chasing. They come down to the same thing, and if you are strong, you will usually be more useful and healthy.

Lift hard, eat enough food to grow, and rest well. There you go: three magic bullets. They don't work fast, but they work every single time you combine them in that order. Guaranteed.

How to Check if You Have Bad Breath

Do you worry about bad breath? We all would prefer to have a clean and healthy mouth. So how come there are so many people with bad breath out there? Do they not care? Rather than not caring, I think it is just that they do not know. If you are worried about this problem then you may want to get a tongue scraper.

Before I start to talk about these oral hygiene tools I would like to mention a quick way to check what your breath smells like. Everyone knows about putting your hand up in front of your mouth and releasing some air from your mouth into it. This sort of works. If your breath stinks, you can probably tell. However what if it is just that your breath is not great, will you be able to notice?

A much more effective way to check the state of your breath is to lick the back of your hand. Then wait until this drys and smell it. As most of the bacteria that causes bad breath lives on your tongue this is an appropriate way to check your own breath.

So what should we do if the back of our hand smells bad? Firstly, do not worry. You are not the only one. The good news is that you now know you have to do something. There are so many people out there that just do not get it. Wanting to improve yourself should be a universal trait however not all of us possess it.

An appropriate oral hygiene routine involves, brushing, flossing, rinsing with a mouth wash and using a tongue cleaner. A lot of us do the first three however not all of us do the scraping. All parts are important. Assuming you are doing the brushing, flossing and using a mouth wash, all you have to do to improve the smell of your mouth is start to clean your tongue and you will be free of bad breath.

How A Weight Lifting Belt Helps Prevent Injuries

If you’ve tweaked your back recently, one thing that you can do, if you have a doctor’s approval, to protect your back while you still go to the gym and lift, is to wear a weight lifting belt.  These belts will help your back to support itself and you will be at a lesser risk for injury by wearing the belt.  But how does the belt actually work?

Lifting belts work by utilizing something known to scientists as inter-abdominal pressure.  Normally your abdomen has a certain level of pressure in it.  Normally you can increase this pressure yourself by sucking in your stomach and clenching your abs.  What happens when you wear a belt is that the back of the belt keeps your back in strict alignment and doesn’t allow it to bow out backwards.  The front of the belt meanwhile, is tightened and pushes your insides together, increasing inter-abdominal pressure.

In short, what increased inter-abdominal pressure does is it allows your spine something to rest itself against.  This means the tiny stabilizer muscles in your back don’t have to work as hard and can relax, even if it’s just ever-so-slightly.  This keeps your back in alignment and makes sure that you most likely won’t tweak it again.

However, it is important to note that a belt will not prevent all injuries.  You will still have to maintain good form while you are lifting and engage your core.  If you don’t you can still get injured even with a belt on.  Or, even if you don’t get injured with a belt on, once you attempt to lift without one on you run and extremely high chance of getting injured.

Using a weight lifting belt is a great way to help protect your back  and help present injuries to it heal faster.  However, always make sure to use it right so you don’t end up getting even more injured down the road!

Why I Use Cherries for Gout

I've had gout for almost twenty years and it wasn't until the past four to five years that I finally got it under control.  How did I accomplish this?  I followed a friend's advice and started eating cherries. Cherries and gout therapy have gone hand in hand for many people for a long time, but I had never really considered it until my friend mentioned trying it.  I was taking gout medication and it really was not reducing the number of gout attacks I was having so I figured why not?  Now that it's been four to five years, why do I continue to use cherries to as one of my main gout treatments?

First of all, continue to use cherries because I believe they work.  I can say that since I began using "cherry therapy" I have significantly reduced my flare ups from two to three times a month to once to twice a year.  If you've ever had gout, you know that is something to get excited about.

Second, U.S. government studies at the Department of Agriculture found in 2003 that cherries can indeed reduce swelling.  The USDA was trying to confirm a study done in California.  What they found was that among test subjects, four common inflammation markers went down after the patients consumed bing cherries.  Why is this important?   The irritation of the uric acid crystals in the joints creates swelling and pain.  Reducing the swelling, reduces the pain during an attack.

Third, cherries help reduce uric acid in the body.  Since uric acid crystallization is what creates gout, reducing uric acid is vital to treating this disease.  Separate studies showed vitamin C and potassium in cherries work both to lower uric acid and also to make uric acid more easy to excrete out of the body.  Both these abilities help reduce uric acid and reduce the chance of crystallization.

I use cherries because since I began my attacks have declined dramatically.  I attribute this to their ability to not only help reduce painful swelling, but also their ability to lower uric acid that creates the swelling in the first place.  Give cherries a try.  I don't think you'll regret it.
