When I moved into the world of freelance writing, I was blessed with the ability to eschew the 9 to 5 and control my schedule more than most of my ex-coworkers, friends, and families. It became clear to me that working for yourself from home (assuming you are single!) makes it a lot easier to get enough sleep. One of the most common problems that comes about as a demand from our work-based life and hectic schedules is that we simply do not get enough sleep.

This is really unfortunate because not only does it endanger others when you're driving or working with heavy equipment, but it means your overall quality of life is simply reduced. Not getting enough sleep literally effects your brain, your mood, your memory, or your ability to live life to the fullest.

It's not the life I want you to live!

Nor is it a life you should want for yourself. To that end, here's what you should be aware of when it comes to the quality of your sleep and making sure you aren't cutting it short.

1. Limit or cut out your caffeine intake. People have different levels of sensitivity towards caffeine. I have a friend who can drink it at 11pm at night and go to sleep two hours later but I suspect his sleep is a bit jittery. For me personally I try to not drink any coffee after 12 noon as I have seen it effect my sleep more than once. For best results, I suggest you do the same. One way to baseline this is to get rid of caffeine entirely and see how it makes you feel once you've gotten through withdrawal. Is your sleep better or worse with it out of your life?

2. Look at your sleep environment. Is it any good? For instance, do you have to deal with loud noises throughout the night such as sirens or dump trunks? What about loud neighbors or perhaps people on the street? Other factors that influence your sleep include the temperature in the room. Is it too cold? Too hot? What about your pillow and bed. Are they too soft or too hard?

3. Consider how your work relates to your sleep schedule. Does your schedule consistently interfere with your ability to go to bed on time and get enough sleep? Do you have a job in which you are so stressed out you wake up in the middle of the night or unable to fall asleep thinking about work? This is a big one and having a problem with work is one of the most common causes of sleep deprivation.

4. How you eat effects not just your weight and your mood but how you sleep. It's the same old story you've heard before just applied to one more healthy habit - in that case, getting a good night of sleep. Eating more processed foods, fried foods, and overeating result in less than stellar sleep. Conversely, eating more raw fruits and vegetables and ensuring adequate intake of your vitamins, protein, fiber, and carbohydrate levels is tied to improving the quality of your sleep.

I'd like to conclude by encouraging you to really make sleep a priority in your life. Don't just push it aside for everything else - especially the most boring things in life, like watching TV and working for your boss! Make a commitment to yourself to get the sleep you need.

When reviewing the market for the best travel pillow, the key consideration should be the amount of comfort and support the pillow provides to your neck and head. While on the road you'll frequently be trying to sleep while sitting upright, and it's important that your pillow doesn't allow your head to jerk around.

The market for travel pillows has widened greatly in recent times and you'll find that there are numerous models and styles to choose from. Here's a simple guide to get you started.

Memory foam travel pillows, micro-beads, down and grain hull (most commonly buckwheat) pillows all fall into the category of "filled travel pillows". Then there is the separate category of blow-up designs or "inflatable travel pillows". Choosing between these two categories typically involves making a trade off between portability and quality of support and it's a decision that you should make as early as possible in your research. You'll find that inflatable pillows - although very lightweight - don't deliver the same degree of support as a memory foam pillow for example. But that most memory foam pillows are bulky, heavy and cumbersome.

Once you've decided on the type of travel pillow you want, your should start to think about shape. Don't make the assumption that travel pillows are always a U shape. This may still be the most popular shape; but alternatives are emerging all the time. The classic U shape is gradually being pushed out by sash shaped, O shaped and comma shaped styles. Consider the following options for starters.

The new TravelRest inflatable travel pillow is a very popular new design. It's unusual in the fact that it is not placed behind the head, but on one side of the head, tethered in place across the upper torso. It does take a moment to exchange from side to side, but once in position you're in for a comfortable ride.

Most memory foam pillows are heavy and cumbersome, but not the Miracle Neck pillow due to its small size and compact shape. And with memory foam you can be secure in the fact that you'll have a superior quality of support and comfort.

If you want a travel pillow that's completely customizable then perhaps the Total Pillow is what you are looking for. This Total Pillow review provides more details. Want a C shape? No problem. Want a rectangular shaped pillow? Also not a problem. V- shaped, Z shaped, take your pick, you got it with this innovative new design.

Foam mattresses have not existed for a very long time. They are a relatively recent discovery of a company called TempurPedic, who decided to do things a little differently. Innerspring mattresses were the number one type of mattress in those times, and it seemed like there was nothing better. But, with the appearance of foam mattresses, people started seeing that they could sleep better and more comfortable.

That's why many started buying a foam mattress and the sales for innerspring ones took an abrupt turn. Another company that made foam mattresses early on is Sleep Innovations. Their Sleep Innovations Novaform Mattress is a known name in the industry and comparing both this one and TempurPedic is going to be interesting:

What do these mattresses have in common?

For starters, they won't need to be turned around after a few uses like you need to with a more cheaper mattress. With a mattress from TempurPedic
or with a Novaform mattress you can stop worrying about the turning aspect. Another thing they have in common is the ability to offer that "sinking in" feeling, that only great mattresses are able to offer. This is in fact one of their selling points which they bring up whenever they can.

Like any Novaform mattress review will tell you, the Novaform is a two layer mattress that offers a good level of support and is quite durable. The durability of the mattress is mostly made up by the 9 inch, inferior layer which is considered to be the foundation of the mattress. This layer is made from high density foam which is commonly used for mattresses today. The second, superior layer is something different. It's 3 inch thick and it's designed to react to different temperatures so that it can provide that "sinking" feeling we talked about earlier.

TempurPedic is focused on creating part customized type mattresses and creates this by making mattresses composed of 2,3 or more layers. What does part customized mean? It means that the user will get a mattress that is more appropriate to its needs.

A comparison between their prices

When you start comparing the prices of a Novaform mattress and a Tempur Pedic mattress, you realize that they seem to be in a totally different quality zone. At least that's what you come up with if you only take a look at their prices.

In fact, Novaform can be as good as almost any Tempur Pedic mattress. And if you compare these two, it would seem that Novaform is quite cheap at an average price of $600. Tempur Pedic, on the other hand, will have prices between $1500 and $3700! This makes this brand an expensive one that only a small category of people can ever afford to buy.

One of the most uncomfortable things that a person can do when relaxing is teeth grinding in sleep. There are many reasons that this action occurs. Because you are asleep when the teeth grinding occurs it may seem like there is no way to stop doing it. Understanding what is causing the action is the first step to making it stop.

There are many different teeth grinding causes but the most common is stress. When an individual is experiencing a large amount of stress the body will respond to it. Another common reason people grind their teeth is due to anger. When something is really upsetting it can have a negative impact on the individual. Anger is most likely to cause teeth grinding if the person does not express their emotions. Another very common reason for this action is misaligned teeth.

If you suffer from teeth grinding you may wonder how to go about removing this bad habit. The best way to ensure you will not suffer from this any longer is to visit your dentist. A dentist can create a mouth guard that fits your teeth perfectly. By wearing this when you sleep you will be unable to grind your teeth. If stress is the cause you may want to do your best to eliminate it. A doctor may be able to prescribe you something that helps you to deal with the stress that you have. Counseling can also have a positive impact. Many people find that exercise reduces stress levels and leaves you feeling refreshed and ready to conquer the tasks ahead of you. There are foods and drinks that, when consumed, make you more likely to grind your teeth. Some of these include caffeine drinks, alcohol and chocolate. If you suffer from grinding teeth in sleep you may want to try these tips to find relief.

When you have scoliosis, finding a good sleeping position can be a huge problem. Scoliosis is a condition wherein your spine curves, rotates, or twists in an unnatural manner. As a result, people with scoliosis tend to have one shoulder or one hip higher than the other.

Although scoliosis is not caused by incorrect sleeping positions and is not aggravated by the way you sleep, adopting a correct posture while sleeping can help relieve pain. Scoliosis may affect the upper back, in the case of thoracic spine scoliosis, while it can also affect the lower spine, also known as lumbar region scoliosis.

How Body Pillows Help

A good body pillow can help support the neck, the shoulder blades and the back, especially if you choose a U-shaped body pillow. In the case of scoliosis patients suffering from upper back pain, it is important to tuck a smaller pillow under the shoulder blades in addition to a standard pillow in order to relieve pain. Side sleepers can benefit greatly from a body pillow, since this help support the legs while the sleeper is resting in a sideward position. For those who lumbar curve scoliosis, a full U-shaped body pillow can help support the lower back while providing ample support for the head and neck.

Consulting With Your Doctor

Prior to buying a pillow however, it is best for people with specific health concerns to consult first with their trusted physicians. If you are suffering from sleep apnea for example, and you’re using a CPAP machine while sleeping, your doctor is likely to recommend a CPAP pillow for you. Since there are many types of pillows and body pillows sold today, getting expert opinion from your healthcare provider can help you choose the pillow that is best suited for you, especially if you have scoliosis or sleep-related disorders like sleep apnea.

I consider myself a light sleeper - I got it from my mom. The thing is every time I wake up from my sleep, I find it hard to fall back asleep and just end up spending numerous hours trying. I get frustrated most of the time especially when I have plans the next day. Lack of sleep means lack of energy which will prevent me from doing the things I want to do. I tried talking to my doctor about it and he recommends that I take sleeping pills to help me sleep through the night. Since I am a bit hesitant on taking sleeping pills, I consistently research on different ways on how to fall asleep fast.

Sleeping or lack thereof impacts a person's health, and in my case, unless I come up with a decent solution for my sleeping problems, I may end up dealing with even more serious health problems. I read somewhere different ways on how to fall asleep easily, from wearing comfy eye masks to drinking a glass of warm milk before going to bed. I plan to try each of them until I find a suitable solution for my problem.

I also saw a list on a website I came across the other day which made perfect sense. I am now planning to change my eating habits as it apparently affects my sleep. And I try not to stress myself throughout the day. I was reading a bunch of websites the other day, and one of them even advised people to bore themselves to sleep. It's funny but it actually makes sense. Thank god for the internet, otherwise I wouldn't have found solutions for my sleeping problems. Let's see if the solutions I read actually work, I am hoping tonight will be a great night for me test them.

Before choosing your memory foam mattress topper there are a few important considerations to be made, regarding appropriateness of toppers in general and the varying qualities of memory foam itself.

Firstly, take a good look at your current mattress and ensure that it has retained its shape, as a sagging, tired old mattress may be beyond help. Placing a great topper on a bad mattress will not do much good and you will be better off looking for a good value replacement set in the clearance sales rather than saving costs on a topper. There are limitations to what a topper can achieve and reinvigorating a lost cause is one of these.

Secondly, consider how well made and the quality of materials that go into the topper you buy. There is a tendency to think that memory foam is all the same. This is what the cheaper manufacturers want you to believe. If you scratch below the surface, however, and do your research, then you will quickly discover that there are different standards of memory foam topper just as there are many different standards of full mattress sets. Do not cut corners. If you are looking at toppers there is already the idea of saving money lodge in your mindset, which is great. But opting for a poorly made topper, of inferior memory foam quality will give you neither the comfort, support nor durability that you are probably after.

To be satisfied with your purchase it needs to be the right size, it needs to be put onto the right mattress and it should be from an established maker. There are still cheap mattresses to be found online that meet all of these requirements, but ensure that you buy from a retailer with a good reputation, either recommended to you or that you know is reliable.

Sometimes snoring, and specifically sleep apnea, becomes so serious that surgical treatment is the best choice. One common procedure to treat this condition is called uvulopalatoplasty.

The person who will undergo uvulopalatoplasty is anesthetized, but he remains awake throughout the surgery. The carbon dioxide laser is used to cut the uvula from the throat, and part of the soft palate. Thirty minutes is enough to finish the procedure. Uvulopalatoplasty usually needs three to five sessions in order to be completed. Additional sessions may be needed depending on the person’s case.

Most patients who have undergone the procedure complain about postoperative pain. This is not unusual though, because the part of the body that was removed is a soft tissue which is connected to the throat. It may be painful to swallow or breathe deeply at first, but taking pain killers can help relieve discomfort.

Uvulopalatoplasty is a very big procedure to go through. A person should think twice before wanting to undergo this procedure. There are still many other options to choose from. One should not confine himself in the decision of undergoing surgical methods for the correction of his physical and health problems. The industry has created a wide selection of treatments and remedies for various problems, including snoring.

It is understandable why you would want to cure your snoring problem, especially if your significant other has been poking you about it every night. However, resorting to a rash decision like surgery is very unadvisable especially for mild cases of snoring. If you really want to overcome your snoring, it is best to first try more practical methods like using snoring aids or snoring sprays. If none of these work, seek the advice of a medical professional. Your snoring problem may not be just snoring, but an even more severe condition that needs real treatment. Always be conscious about yourself because no one else can help you overcome your problems but you alone.

Unless you've never slept a day in your life you are well aware of what exactly snoring is. Snoring is simply defined as air flowing through our nose and down through the throat. It might sound complicated but its not and it can be brought about by a variety of different factors. Some of the most common reasons people suffer from snoring are nasal and other seasonal sicknesses, obesity, and other bronchial irritations.

The most common way to stop snoring in its tracks is to try and change up the way you sleep or look into buying a stop snoring device. The way you sleep directly correlates to whether or not you are going to snore (with several rare exceptions.) For most people sleeping on the side will offer more snoring support than sleeping on the back. If you are already sleeping on your side and still snoring, you may want to try and drink more fluids before heading off to catch some sleep. This will lubricate the throat and may lessen the chance of narrowing throat tissues which then produce the noise that we refer to as snoring. If none of these work, some doctors have recommended that people lose 10% of their body weight to curb snoring. I myself have very little problem snoring, although I did feel more refreshed and awake after I lost about thirty pounds this past summer.

When it's all said and done the best way to stop snoring is to invest in one of the many stop snoring devices available on the market today. These products will aim to put your body in such a way that snoring will become impossible. Others will work to keep your nasal and other passages clear so that they do not come together in the night and cause noise (snoring) to emanate. Whatever road you travel down to stop snoring, just be sure to stay consistent, and if nothing seems to work you may want to make a visit to your doctor.

We all know and recognize the snoring sound. This noise appears during the night and comes from the air passage in the throat area. But why do people snore? Let’s explore this a little bit in this article.

You can take snoring as a symptom of another disorder. The main cause is vibration in the muscle and tissues in the throat area and we are talking more specifically here about the uvula and the soft palate. There are also sub-causes that will lead to the vibration, and it is good to understand them if we want to know how to stop snorring.

When we sleep, the muscles in the throat are as relaxed as any other muscle in the body. This narrows down considerably the air passage, causing vibrations along the way, since there is more “friction” with the air. The size of the passage will vary the snoring sound – it will get louder when there is little space for air pass and when the air passes faster. Nobody is free from snoring; even babies can have this problem! In the case of babies it is very important to talk with a doctor immediately to discard any blockage problems.

The vibrations can also be a result of a more serious condition called sleep apnea. To discard a condition of this type, you might need to undergo a sleep study to check if there are any episodes of apnea during the night.

Middle-aged men are the ones who are more prone of developing snoring, since the neck is wider and has more muscular tissue. On the other hand, women snore less than men because they produce progesterone hormones, which help a lot in inhibiting snoring.

There are other causes of snoring such as excess weight, alcohol consumption, smoking, and of course the sleeping position. Knowing the exact trigger will be key on learning how you can avoid snoring during the night.
