Are Samsung LED TVs Durable Enough?
They most definitely are, but that's not the only thing they do well, or do better than the previous generation. The word is still out if LED based TVs are worth their slightly higher retail price, or are TFT TVs a better choice because, well, they're simply cheaper in absolute terms. This article will not go into a detailed explanation to which statement is true, but it takes you through the reasons I think LED TVs are more durable, robust and a better choice if you're thinking in a long term investment.
To have a background of basic understanding, I'd like you to know a little more about how TFT TVs relate to LED TVs. They both use the same (or very similar) TFT and LCD panel, but the light source that resides behind it is not even similar by a long shot. TFT TVs use fluorescent lamp tubes, not unlike those that you'd see in any public place. These tubes are efficient, rather close to the optimal white spectrum, and definitely a lasting substitute to anything available at the time of introduction of regular TFT flat-screens.
LED TVs, on the other hand, use a row of white light-emitting diodes on each edge of the screen. There are array-lit models, mostly coming from LG, but these are much more expensive, and not nearly as thin as edge-lit versions. One could say that it isn't an achievement to change one light source with another, and call it a new type of TV. They'd probably be right, too, but they wouldn't be considering the long-term effects and all the implications of such a swap of backlight sources.
Samsung likes to stay a few steps ahead of its competitors, and that's why it incorporates white LEDs of the most durable type in its Samsung LED TV lines, especially series 8 and 9. These diodes are rated at 100,000 operating hours, which is a five to tenfold increase over the expected life-time of light tubes. It sounds like an arbitrary estimation, which in fact it is. LEDs made in the 1970s are still in operation, so it's comfortable to say that LEDs manufactured at the current state of technology are bound to be more sophisticated.
Actually, you don't even need the 100,000 hours operating limit, what it does to the TV is making it more resilient. Light-emitting diodes can't be easily destroyed through shocks, vibration, cold, dust or moisture. Excessive heat however greatly reduces the expected life-time of the light source. A 100,000 hours estimated mean-time between failures means that you can wander outside the temperature specifications, and yet rightfully expect the TV to be fully operational for a good few dozen thousands of hours.
It's a sort of cushion, or buffer against unforeseeable events that reduce the life time of the TV. No one in their right mind would expect a TV to operate in 2102, which is what a LED Samsung TV can theoretically do under optimal circumstances and 3 hours of operation a day.
For these reasons I believe Samsung LED TVs to be the optimal choice for long-term. If you don't care the least bit about any of the beneficial features, or longevity, you can still opt for a traditional, fluorescent lamp lit TFT, and comfortably use it for three-five years without any major issues.
How to Scan Documents to PDF
If you have the right tools, it isn't hard to scan documents to PDF. This is possible using free programs or even functions of your operating system. For some, such capability may even come bundled with the scanner itself. Though even in that case it is good to understand what the capabilities of the bundled software are, because they might not offer the features that you require for your project. Document scanning is the process of capturing an image of a document, much as you would make if taking a picture of the document with a digital camera. Depending on the type of scanner, this could be a simple black and white image at low resolution, or a full color and high resolution image that more accurately portrays the nature of the document you have scanned.
In any case, you can then create a PDF file from the scanned document. The ways to scan documents to PDF are many. Perhaps the most straightforward method is to simply copy and paste the image of the document into a PDF editor. While this is a simple process, the results are not always favorable. This is because the pasted image will simply be an image. If it contains text, it will not be editable within the PDF editor. Obviously this won't cut it in cases where the document must me updated and maintained into the future. In such cases another step is necessary, and that is to run the image of text through an optical character recognition program to extract the text in an editable format. This can be done with freeware or shareware programs, or even in net based applications you access through your browser while connected to the world wide web.
While such applications are inexpensive or even free to use, sometimes they are lacking in functionality or are unacceptably prone to errors or it might be difficult to convert pdf to powerpoint or to convert pdf to ppt. In such cases, it may make sense to buy a commercial product which offers the extended features, accuracy, and functionality that you need. These packages often include everything you need to do the entire process in one step, rather than having to use a mix-mash of various programs (scanning, OCR, image editing, file type conversion) to scan documents to PDF.
An Alternative to a Subwoofer Amplifier
Every so often I like to mix things up with my audio system and try out new things to see how I can improve the sound quality by being clever (or at least trying to be) and avoiding spending too much money. Recently my subwoofer amplifier broke and I tried to come up with an affordable alternative that would hopefully get the job done just as well. Here’s what I came up with.
Although I didn’t have a suitable amplifier to connect to my subwoofer I do own a fairly expensive 18” speaker complete with an enclosed Cabinet which was manufactured specifically to produce large bass levels. So I thought it would be fun to try out and see exactly what would happen if I set my system to multi channel mode and used the surround back as a makeshift amp for my subwoofer.
I must hold my hands up and say that this was an epic failure, what I got was some very worrying low frequency buzzing being emitted from my front speakers which my tech savvy friend told me was probably due to the receiver, in absence of a subwoofer amp, sending the low frequencies to any other speakers it could find. If I turned the volume up really loud I definitely did get a shoddy bass effect, but it was nowhere near the quality I was hoping for.
In risk of ruling the experiment a complete failure I actually asked my engineer friend (I use the term loosely) and asked him if he could offer me another make shift solution to my problem. He did and I must admit that it worked, not only that but it did so far better than I had anticipated. I was told that if I could get my hands on an ordinary amp and connected it to my existing receiver’s LFE output, my bass speaker could be powered by this.
At this point I must state that this method may not work on all systems and it’s probably quite relative to the manufacturer of the model in question. I used Elite Pioneer system in my experiment. If you feel uncomfortable carrying out such a haphazard experiment on your system you might prefer to at products which are specially designed to perform this in practice. The SA100 100 subwoofer amp from Dayton should do the job quite nicely.

There are so many features that I love about the Logitech harmony one remote control but I have to say that the best part is the LCD touchscreen.
