How You Can Backup Your Data

Backing up your data is something everyone should think about doing. The last thing you probably need is to have a hard drive crash and the potential of losing all of your data.

If you only have one computer, then backing up data can be as simple as copying your data files from the internal hard drive to an external hard drive. You can create a scheduled job to run everyday that can perform the data copy automatically for you. By creating a job, you can then schedule the backup to run when you aren't using the computer, such as in the middle of the night.

For those that do have to manage multiple computers, one solution is to attach a storage server to the network. By using a storage server as a network attached storage (NAS) device (more information: Technically Easy), you can reduce the backup maintenance considerably.

Once the storage server is connected to the network, instead of saving data files to the internal hard drive of each computer, you would save the files to the server. Do so has the benefits of:

  1. Allows you to share data easily between computers.
  2. Allows you to backup on location instead of multiple locations.

Point 2 is the key to reducing the backup maintenance. You will now only need to run one backup on the server as opposed to multiple backups - one for each computer.

Another solution is to backup your data online, which has many benefits as well, including offsite backup, automatic backup, and security. The offsite backup is a huge advantage of online backups because if something were to happen to the physical location of the original data, it won't impact the backup copy.

Regardless of how you choose to backup your data, it is important to develop a good backup plan to keep your data safe and protected.
