Tips to Maintaining Wrought Iron Furniture

For years, countless numbers of people have enjoyed the superiority  and elegance of wrought iron furniture. Welded from the raw iron metal, wrought iron patio furniture has a refinement that stands the test of time. Unfortunately, (unlike cast aluminum patio furniture)  this strong metal furniture so beautifully fashioned has an enemy and that enemy is rust. But, just a little time and a good maintenance plan is all that's needed to keep your furniture in top notch shape.

It doesn't take much to keep wrought iron outdoor furniture in good shape; just a good old fashioned bucket of soap and water should do the trick. Wash down the furniture and be sure to rinse well. Be very conscious of NOT leaving the furniture standing in water and make sure it completely dries. Once or twice a year, it's good practice to polish the furniture, like you would a car, with a auto wax. Like protecting the finish of an automobile from the weather, a good coat of was will provide a barrier for your furniture.

Occasionally, rust will set in even in the best of maintenance plans. When it does, address the problem right away by brushing the area with a wire brush. The wire brush will remove loose paint and the surface rust so that a coat of touch-up paint can be applied to the area. Touch-up paint is usually available form the manufacturer but if it is not, a coat of rustoleum (found at your local hardware store or even Wal-Mart) should do the trick.

In the winter, when the furniture won't be used as much, it's a good idea to keep the furniture well covered or, better yet, put inside in a shed or covered porch. This will ensure an added level of protection from the elements.

Adhering to these few simple steps is sure to keep your furniture in tip top shape for years to come.
